A Single Day’s Journey of a Dead Man.

The highly acclaimed BlackMilk Productions film Jornada Del Muerto was recently released on-line, but this epic journey started more than a year ago.

BlackMilk directors Ronnie Belcher and Thomas Dorman were asked to premier one of their films at the “ON THE BOIL” film event at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. The only problem was that all their films to date have had public screenings elsewhere… The team had to quickly produce something new and unique to fit the criteria of this prestigious event.

And so Jornada Del Muerto was born…

The BlackMilk team worked day and night to finish the production in time for the screening, but without compromising the beautiful tale that was written on paper. As with all the BlackMilk films, Jornada Del Muerto is riddled with beautiful scenery, symbolism, rich sound design, and dream-like visual elements.

Many believe that this film is rather a piece that should be in an art gallery and that the magic of Jornada Del Muerto transcends the boundaries of any commercial screening realm.

A travelogue through the mind of an unknown solder, Jornada del Muerto invites it’s viewers to stroll through spectral landscapes of hidden beauty. It explores the personal tragedy of dying, with symbolic comparison to the first nuclear explosions which ended WW2. Delving into the relationship between love and death, Jornada del Muerto is full of archetypal characters and subtle humor. Surreal situations with small bursts of animation help drive this unconventional story forward. Jornada del Muerto remains very open to subjective interpretation, while not compromise it’s narrative element.

Jornada Del Muerto is a classic BlackMilk Production film where the whole team brought their strengths to the table to create an amazing piece of audiovisual art.

BlackMilk Showreel 2008-2012

This piece showcases all the work we have created in the past four years. Every single shot was created with the help of numerous great and highly skilled people that dedicated their talent and time for the pure love of it. Everything was created on a near zero budget.

HOW THIS CAME TO BE:

It all started a couple of months ago … we were approached by a fellow South African filmmaker, Ric Shields to help set up a screening of his short movie ‘Bloodrush’. Out of this grew an event which will showcase some of the most Macabre, dark and strange short films around, along with a great music video.

‘Bloodrush’ was shot in Sydney, Australia, and completed over the space of three years. It’s a very interesting take on the Urban Vampire full of memorable moments.

A good friend of his, Mark Jackson will be showing his short film ‘Die Hel’. Which was shown at Grahamstown a few years ago. A very moody, very South African short film, set in the Karroo.

Along with these two great shorts, you’ll get to see two Flamedrop Productions films.

The new Terminatryx “Obsession” music video which will be premiering at the event.

‘Marked’ a short film which features great special effects make-up.

We will be screening three of our latest films namely: Anna, Jornada Del Muerto and Onrusbarend.

Anna

Set in a typical rural South African setting, Anna tells the story of a lonely couple who meet on a deserted road on their way to Cape Town. An unfortunate event leads them to spending a night together in a creepy small town hotel. A night of unbearable horror lies ahead, as a cycle of pleasure and pain comes to its blood conclusion.

Onrusbarend

Documenting the emotional melström of an unfortunate woman. Onrusbarend is an unsettling story filled with Lovecraftian, South African and biblical references, hinting at the process of inception, birth and finally propagation of a meme. Onrusbarend starts with a narration by Esté Kira and won the South African Shnit Realtime festival 2011. It was filmed and edited over three consecutive days.

Delving into Japanese folklore

Emma-O Banner

Some things are cursed and should never return to the physical realm to reap its vengeance, but Emma-O (2009), will be released online on Monday 26 March 2012.

Eons before the expertise Este Kira and Leon Visser forged BlackMilk Productions into the force that it is today, Ronnie Belcher & Thomas Dorman embarked on a journey that lead them on paths beyond their wildest fears.

“During the writing and production stages we used to go to Chinese supermarkets and only eat Asian cuisine. We wanted to immerse ourselves in Asian culture. All aspects of it; food, film, literature, music, folklore, etc”.

Right from the start the team had many obstacles to overcome. “It was the most difficult film to cast as no one wanted to play any of the characters. We were told that the content would prevent us from finding Asian actors willing to be part of the production”. But Ronnie and Thomas persevered to cast all the roles at the last minute.

So where does the name and concept come from?

“We wanted to name the film after the murder weapon, which is a statue of Emma-O”.

Emma-O is the Japanese Buddhist ruler and judge of the underworld. He passes judgment on all the dead. Men or women who committed misdeeds will be sentenced to torture or miserable future lives.

The script is based on classic Japanese ghost stories where a cheating husband would kill his wife to marry his mistress. The wife’s ghost then returns to seek vengeance.

In this case, the dead wife’s ghost is “Onryō”, a mythological spirit from Japanese folklore who is able to return to the physical world in order to seek vengeance. Powerless in the physical world, they often suffer at the capricious whims of their male lovers. In death they become strong.

It was an intense project with only three months to complete the final film. Ronnie and Thomas wrote the first draft during July 2009 with Emma-O winning two awards at the S.A. Horrorfest in October 2009. “We believe that it is one of the best scripts that we have written”.

Why we love KiTTY KiLL

Cat Frame 21

February happens to be the month of love. It also happens to be the month that we will be releasing our very first film, Kitty Kill, online. Yes, that is correct; you will be able to view this dark tale of love gone horribly wrong. We are only doing this because we love you.

It has been said that love may be understood as part of the survival instinct, a function to keep human beings together against menaces. But what if those ‘menaces’ come from within the love itself? The diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.

Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.

KiTTY KiLL is a film that sets viewers on a journey through the minds of a man and woman trapped in a dehumanising game of possession and nostalgia. The film is also saturated in personal symbolism and dark imagery, which we believe may be interpreted in many ways. But, as with many BlackMilk films, KiTTY KiLL is about love.

KiTTY KiLL will go live on our YouTube and Vimeo channels on Monday, 20 February 2012.

Blood, blood, some more blood and Horrorfest

A twisted tale about how BlackMilk’s new short film, Anna, was born.

– by Barend Buitekamer

Anna Teaser

By a sheer twist of fate I somehow got drawn into BlackMilk Productions, after I was afforded the opportunity to have some of my de-compositions read at a sideshow event (Bloody Parchment) during the South African Horrorfest in 2010. I attended the screening of a short film they entered into the Horrorfest at the time. Needless to say, Regression was just as hauntingly beautiful as it was powerful and creepy. Frame by frame it was a work of art.

I have to point out that I’m very careful when I use the word ‘art’. Art is in the eye of the beholder, but very often and ironically, ‘creativity misunderstood’ is classified as ‘art’ by beholders destitute of any artistic insight. Maybe this was the case when a critic labeled Jornada del Muerto, also by BlackMilk Productions, as weirdo noir that belongs in an art gallery.

Regression was dark, macabre, surreal, and damn disturbing for a short film. Hence, it won the award for best short film at the 2010 Horrorfest, which came as no surprise. Its legacy lingered and it also set a high standard in the genre of short horror films. To make short films that linger long in the memories of those who appreciate them, is a form of art in itself. The actual film is the end result of intense focused creative energy projected onto the retinas, and then into the minds of viewers by an artistic collective.

The core of BlackMilk Productions is made up of four eccentric semi-sane individuals with a passionate love for filmmaking. They are: Estè Kira (Art and Production Design), Leon Visser (Director of Photography and Editor), Ronnie Belcher (Director, Writer and Sound Design), and Thomas Dorman (Director and Writer). Together they are a creative force to be reckoned with.

When I got news that BlackMilk Productions was working on a film for the 2011 Horrorfest my blood immediately started boiling with excitement. When they informed me that my involvement was required in the film my blood boiled over. Some drops landed on the script and some on the set.

Anna Teaser

Humbly maintain that I don’t deserve any credit for bloody smears or stains in the production ofAnna, but I was threatened with torture and dismemberment. Let’s face it, I can’t act my way out of a parking ticket or into a coffin. So, how was I to be or not to be the miserable and dodgy desk clerk of a creepy and ill-omened small town hotel? It was decided that I should just be myself and; or imitate the six legged resident evils indigenous to cockroach hotels.

By the way, to enhance the fear-factor a variety of insects were used in the production of Anna. This includes maggots, super worms, and hissing cockroaches. None of them were harmed or eaten by BlackMilk Productions. Food and catering on set was provided by Marie Lourens, who had the difficult task to satisfy the culinary needs of both vegetarians and cannibals. It was Marie and Nerine Dorman who convinced me to eat my first fish head at a BlackMilk fish braai staged for the collective. I just couldn’t do those eyes.

No army can march on an empty stomach, but no army of actors were needed to make Anna a memorable cinematic event of shock and awe. Instead, a select few was auditioned and eventually chosen for their commendable acting skills. They are: Jessica Miles, Alexander Hart, Shane Mullis, and Noa Shortridge. Without them the production of Anna would’ve been a mission impossible.

The story of Anna starts off when a lonely couple meets on a sunny day on a deserted rural road on their way to Cape Town. An unfortunate event leads them to spending a night together in a creepy small town hotel. A night of unspeakable terror lies ahead, as a cycle of pleasure and pain comes to a bloody conclusion.

Estè, who was responsible for SFX make-up, almost had her hands full (of real blood) to make sure there was enough fake blood on set to realistically enhance the film’s bloody conclusion. Her excellent skills as art and production designer really came into being, when she had to create an unsuitable environment out of an already unsuitable environment, and transform San Remo Guest House in Gardens into the Hell-a-Day Inn. San Remo is soon to become San Removed, because it was recently sold by its owner after becoming a decrepit haven for the desperate and destitute. This includes drug dealers and prostitutes. Whilst on set I overheard more than one argument turn into death threats, but in comparison with certain characters in Anna, the characters of San Remo were peace activists.

The outdoor scenes for Anna were shot on the long and winding roads in the picturesque outskirts of Philadelphia on the West Coast. I’m convinced that a few passing motorists and locals were perplexed by the bizarre events taking place next to the roadside. “No! There wasn’t an accident! No! We’re not shooting a Marilyn Manson music video. We’re just shooting an advertisement for tomato sauce! No! We’re not in any way affiliated with Ed Gein.” Get my drift?

Anna Teaser

Being on set with BlackMilk Productions has its dangers. One can easily die of laughter when Leon, Thomas, and Ronnie start telling their notoriously twisted mother-jokes. Then there’s also some innovative and sometimes funny props that become part of, dare I say watermarks, in BlackMilk films. In Anna there’s a BlackMilk beer label, a packet of BlackMilk cigarettes aptly named Coffin Nails, and a bottle of BlackMilk Bourbon. As part of the soundtrack, even a BlackMilk sermon was delivered by Reverend Ronnie for the twisted individual who came up with the idea of Vleisgenoot as the name of a porn magazine. That individual is me…

Anna’s soundtrack contains music by K.O.B.U.S! and, believe it or not, Charles Jacobie. In my opinion, this effect of contrast and potential is a Jungian principle that enhances both the visual focus and auditory tension of the film without diluting the energy of Gestalt.

Ronnie and Thomas took equal turns in skillfully directing Anna, but without the keen cinematographic eye and camera skills of Leon, the film would’ve had less of a visual impact. Anna has a more linear script than other BlackMilk films, and this proved to be not only a challenge for the directors, but also for the cameraman. Between Leon, Thomas, and Ronnie they managed to blur the lines of a linear script with just enough surrealism and atmosphere to accentuate the storyline, but not to reveal the plot. Estè added her touch by placing the actors in realistic environments; so that they could immerse themselves into the ambience and story of Anna.

The plot started when Ronnie and Thomas started writing the script on 15 July 2011, just before Jornada del Muerto was filmed. The shot list was completed by 15 August 2011. Filming took place on 27 & 28 August 2011 and the bulk was completed from 2 to 4 September 2011. Editing and sound was done by 17 September 2011 and the trailer was released upon an unsuspecting world. The plot thickened a week later when Anna was screened for the first time to cast and crew at an exclusive and very decadent event in Leon’s apartment.

And then, the plot got even thicker when BlackMilk Productions was nominated to make a short film for the shnit Real Time Competition hosted by shnit shortfilmfestival. Their film was screened and won the Real Time Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film.

I find it onrusbarend (disquieting/foreboding) that this BlackMilk film was called Onrusbarend. Onrus is a fictional town in one of my short stories, Barend is my name, and Anna is a sinister character in more than one of them. Somehow she seems to follow me… to haunt me. Anna will be screened at the Labia Theatre on Orange Street at the end of October 2011 in Cape Town during the South African Horrorfest. Anna will be there. She wants to meat… oops sorry… meet you.

What is “Jornada Del Muerto”?

Jornada

Jornada Del Muerto: A Single Day’s Journey of a Dead Man.

It all started with a phone call…

On a sunny winter’s afternoon Ronnie was busy having a cup of BlackMilk Coffee when his mobile phone rang. He didn’t recognise the number, but proceeded to answer.

On the other end was none other than Garrreth Bird, one of Cape Town’s top independent film makers. He informed Ronnie that he was planning on creating a film screening event to be held within the next month and wanted to know if BlackMilk Productions had any film material that they would like to be included at this prestigious evening. The only catch was that the film should not have been screened elsewhere, thus being a premier.

“All our films have had previous screenings, but we do have a few adverts and smaller projects that could possibly meet the needs…” Ronnie replied.

Garrreth suggested that the evening should rather incorporate short films, and not adverts of any kind.

“We will make you a film for this evening…” Ronnie promised, without thinking about what he had just said.

Silence.

“That is extremely bold…” Garrreth replied.

“We will do it.” Ronnie assured him.

Click.

And so the latest BlackMilk Productions film, Jornada Del Meurto, was born.

Ronnie Belcher and Thomas Dorman wrote the script the following day and sent it to the rest of the BlackMilk team. Leon Visser and Esté Kira made it their own. Shortly after, the screenplay was written and finalized by the team. A war torn, post apocalyptic world was created, riddled with Surrealism and Symbolism, true to the nature of BlackMilk.

As per usual, the film was directed by both Ronnie and Thomas.

Esté Kira arrived on set with a truckload of props and constructed the most interesting and beautiful elements that lives within the Jornada Del Muerto world. The team trusts her unique vision more than they can express, and she never disappoints.

Leon Visser had one final look at the screenplay and you could see that behind his eyes a whole film was running silently. All he had to do was to capture it with his camera, and so he did. He is also responsible for the beautiful final touches and soul that the final visual edit provides, with Lohan Koegelenberg capturing breathtaking stills.

Thomas and Ronnie wanted to create a film that could resonate with some of their earlier works such as KiTTY KiLL, and decided to include animation that would act as ‘bridges’ between scenes. Thomas worked around the clock to mastermind and create the final animation, which turned out spectacular. These are true works of art that add another layer to the film.

“We also knew that the sound design had to be something special… We wanted to create an audible experience, as well as a visual.” Ronnie states. Ronnie was in charge of the sound design, which turned out to be exactly what he set out to do. “This film is going to look AND sound amazing on screen.” he adds.

Paul Malherbe, Sasha Perdigao, Zoltan T. Szabo, and Barend Buitekamer were cast as the characters, and they all did a fantastic job, lending their amazing talent to this production. The BlackMilk team also makes a quick appearance in one of the scenes…

Jornada Del Muerto is a classic BlackMilk Production where the whole team brought their strengths to the table to create an amazing short film. They would also like to extend their gratitude to all their friends that helped with this project.

Jornada Del Muerto will premier on 20 July 2011 at the “ON THE BOIL” film screening event at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. See more details HERE.

BlackMilk Coffee

It’s been quite a while since our last blog post, but all at BlackMilk hasn’t been quiet!

Though we are still looking for sponsorship for our ‘Sunrise Hotel’ short film, we have been busying ourselves on a couple of projects that cost us next to nothing and might bring in some extra money to put towards Sunrise Hotel.

The first of these projects is adding extra value to our DVD. We have recently filmed interviews and have been planning a couple of little surprises as well… Please note that the DVD sales are open for pre-orders. Please visit our previous blog post HERE for more information.

We have also been asked to do a short movie for a film festival at the Athol Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. Over two weekends of filming, we created a little bit of surrealist magic… We will post more about this in the near future.

But let’s get back to business.

We have also just released a coffee range!

The idea for this came about while Ronnie was on holiday over December in the magical town of Hogsback. “I was taking a stroll through the misty dark forest one afternoon and all I wanted was a strong, dark cup of good coffee. I ended up at this little coffee shop and had a few cups, which immediately took away the cold chills! That is where the idea was born.” Ronnie remembers.

A few months later we were ready and after many a night taste testing various coffees imported from all over the world, we have finally decided on a blend that we feel we can be proud to put our name on. The official BlackMilk Coffee supplier has also just been voted one of South Africa’s top coffee importers and distributors, and we are very proud to be associated with them!

Coffee

BlackMilk coffee is an exclusive pure classic Arabica blend that consists of the finest beans imported from south Central America. Our very own Thomas Dorman designed the packaging.

Along with the launch of the coffee, we produced both a teaser advert and a full advert starring Aidan Whytock and Samantha Tunnah.
